The Commission is an open source project that seeks to explore the nature of organized crime in America. It is a fictional narrative which centers around the struggles of one man, John Gotti, who begins his career as an upstart mafia soldier and he has to overcome his own personal demons in order for him to rise through the ranks of the family. By using open source software, The Commission aims to provide its readers with insight into how organized crime operates by presenting them with a full 360° view of what is happening in their lives. The Commission was built by a team of individuals who wish to provide their readers with an alternative narrative. The Commission has already been recognized as one of the best open source projects by the Open Source Initiative. On August 1, 2013, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette chose The Commission as one of the top five nominees for their 2013 Better World Awards. The "Steel Believer" chose The Commission as one of the best open source projects in 2012 and honored it with a Bronze Level Award on October 11, 2012. The "Open Magazine" chose The Commission as one of its Top 25 Projects and honored it with a Silver Level Award on November 22, 2011. The Commission has grown into an open source project that has released over 120,000 words of fiction. The project is currently in its third revision and has reached an advanced stage of beta. However, because The Commission grows by word of mouth it is not yet ready to reach the threshold required for final release. Project administrators are currently working towards completing the final revisions before releasing The Commission. The Commission was initially envisioned as a series of non-fiction articles written by several members of the University of Pittsburgh community who wished to experience what it was like to be in organized crime. However, the project has since evolved into a fictionalized account of what happens when upstarts from the traditional New York City Mafia families make incursions into "The Commission", a fictional governing body which oversees all organized crime in America. The Commission is set in New York City, Los Angeles and Las Vegas during the 1980s. The project incorporates material from FBI's NY Division Organized Crime squad, which includes information about other family bosses such as Carmine Persico and Anthony Corallo as well as other FBI informants such as Carmine Sessa and Greg Scarpa. The Commission also incorporates information about the Italian-American Mafia, particularly at the commission level, which includes information about reputed mobsters such as Joe Gallo and Joe Otero. The project also incorporates material from other sources to include information about organized crime around the world. The Commission won The Steel Believer's Gold Award in 2012 for the best Open Source Project of The Year. This award was initially given to The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in 2010 after they declared that Vanished NY was their selection for that year’s Best New York Reporter. http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/news/cityregion/s_597839. cfa1e77820
